Twenty years ago I carved a series of beads based on traditional Japanese
small pattern textile designs. Twelve years later, I knew that I wanted
to use this design of stylized wisteria vines as a background for a
bronze applique. I wanted the applique to be a bird, and settled on
a kingfisher, and at the time, I was happy with my choice.
This winter though, the idea of another version of this bead crept into
my mind, and refused to leave. I tried to work on other subjects, but
the urge was irresistible, so I surrendered and began again. This is
a larger bead, and the bird I chose, the sparrow, represents qualities
that I think I could use in the coming year
In Japan the sparrow is a symbol of resilience and adaptability for
its ability to survive in different environments, even in difficult
circumstances. They are also associated with domestic harmony and a
sense of community. The wisteria vine can represent both love and longevity.
